Where it comes from

The story of Jaison

Iasōn led the Argonauts, and the New Testament gives the name to a host in Thessalonica, which carried a pagan Greek name into Christian use. English took it after the Reformation and it stayed quiet until the twentieth century, when Jason climbed into the American top ten within a generation. That produced respellings: Jayson, Jasen, Jaison and Jaysen all appear in the 1970s and 1980s, with Jaison peaking in 1980. Separately, Jaison is a genuine name among Syrian Christians in Kerala, where English-derived names with -son endings are common, and that is a distinct stream in American records.

Meaning

Healer

From Greek Iasōn, built on iasthai, to heal, and connected to the healing goddess Iaso. The reading is settled. The i of Jaison is an American respelling with no separate history, and it also functions as an Indian transliteration — Jaison is used in Kerala, where the -son ending on Christian names is common.

Jaison sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 59 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaison went to 16 boys in 2025, but Jayson and Jayzon are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 410, which makes it the 558th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,050 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 4,166 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 106,755 for Jaison itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
