Where it comes from

The story of Jaelle

In Judges 4 and 5, Sisera, the commander of the Canaanite army, flees on foot after Barak's victory and takes shelter in Jael's tent; she gives him milk, covers him, and when he sleeps drives a tent peg through his temple. The Song of Deborah in chapter 5 is generally reckoned among the oldest Hebrew poetry preserved, and it celebrates her. The name survived in Jewish and Puritan use, and the French Jaëlle is a modern formation. Its American record is recent and follows French-speaking Haitian and African families as well as English-speaking biblical naming, peaking in 2011.

Meaning

Mountain goat, ibex

From Hebrew Yāʿēl, a wild or mountain goat — the Nubian ibex of the Judean desert. The reading is settled. The French Jaëlle adds the feminine -le ending and a diaeresis marking that the a and e are said separately; American records drop the diaeresis.

Pronouncing Jaelle

jah-EL

Two syllables, stress on the second, with the a and e said separately — which is what the French diaeresis marks. American records drop it, and English readers then say JAYL or JAY-ell.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and concrete — a specific desert animal.
  • Elle and Yael are both available as short forms.
  • The biblical bearer is unforgettable.
What to consider
  • American records drop the diaeresis and the pronunciation collapses.
  • Jael, Jaelle, Yael and Yaelle are four spellings of one name.
  • The story attached to it is a killing, celebrated in verse.
