Our story of Jaelani
Our story of Jaelani is a story of an ending that left its language. Leilani and Kailani made -lani familiar in American ears, and by the 2000s families were attaching their own fronts — Jaelani, Kylani, Nylani, Maylani. Jae- comes from the American Jae and Jay rather than from Hawaiian. The back half means the sky in a living language and always has; the front does not come from it, and both halves deserve naming for what they are.

heavenly
The lani element is genuine Hawaiian for 'sky', 'heaven' or 'royal'. The Jae- front is modern American and not a Hawaiian element. The compound is not documented in the language. Half the name is inherited and half is new.

Line the two peaks up, and Barri's path sketches the road Jaelani is walking now.
Jaelani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
