Our story of Barri
Barri stands where a boy's name and a girl's name meet. Barry came into English from Irish names built on Bairre; Barbara gave girls a short form that begins the same way. Across the Irish Sea, Welsh speakers write the same five letters as the name of a town: Y Barri, the port and resort of the Vale of Glamorgan, whose docks once shipped coal from the valleys to the world. Two syllables, a place to point to on the map, and a spelling the town had first.

Fashion outlook
Barri sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Sounds like Barry, a name everyone can say.
- Carries a real Welsh place name.
- It will be written Barry, and on paper some will assume a boy.
- Nearly every Barri is a girl, while Barry is overwhelmingly a boys' name; a boy named Barri would simply be read as Barry respelled.
