The story of Effie
Euphemia was a martyr at Chalcedon whose shrine hosted a great church council in 451, which made her name known across the Greek and Latin churches. Scotland took it up particularly strongly and shortened it to Effie — the parish registers are full of them, and Walter Scott gave one a central role in The Heart of Midlothian. American use peaked in the 1880s.
Meaning
well-spoken, of good repute
Through Euphemia, from the Greek eu, 'well', and pheme, 'speech' or 'report'. The compound means both speaking well and being well spoken of. The English word 'euphemism' is built on the same pair, which makes the meaning unusually easy to check.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and checkable against an ordinary English word.
- Euphemia stands behind it as a documented saint's name with a church council held at her shrine.
- Short, warm and easy for a very young child to say.
- The bare clipping collides with a modern English expletive.
- It is strongly period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
