Where it comes from

The story of Collette

Colette wrote Gigi and the Claudine novels, was the first Frenchwoman given a state funeral, and was refused Catholic rites because of her divorces. Saint Colette of Corbie reformed the Poor Clares in the fifteenth century. Collette is the doubled-l spelling and appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

victory of the people

From the French Colette, a diminutive of Nicole, from the Greek nike, 'victory', and laos, 'people'. The doubled l is an English spelling variation. The Greek elements are ordinary and the compound transparent.

Collette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1966, with 189 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Collette went to 82 girls in 2025, but Colette and Kolette are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,062, which makes it the 295th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,944 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,513 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 19,601 for Collette itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the novelist got a state funeral and was refused a religious one is a first-rate fact.
  • The victory-of-the-people meaning is transparent and strong.
  • The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • Colette with one l is the standard French spelling.
  • It is period-coded to the mid-twentieth century.
  • It reads as a diminutive in French.
