Jade is two different rocks. Jadeite and nephrite look alike, feel alike and are chemically unrelated, and nobody knew until a French mineralogist separated them in 1863. Almost all Chinese jade carved before the eighteenth century is nephrite; the bright green jadeite came later, from Burma.

Where it comes from

The story of Jadah

China worked jade for eight thousand years and treated it as more valuable than gold or silver, and the material it worked was nephrite, quarried in the far west and traded along the routes that later carried silk. Confucian writing compares jade to virtue — hard, warm to the touch, ringing when struck, not easily broken — and the character for it is among the oldest in the script. When Burmese jadeite arrived in the eighteenth century it was brighter and harder and was received as something new rather than as the same thing. That two materials had been carrying one reputation for millennia was only established in a Paris laboratory in the 1860s.

Meaning

the green stone

From Spanish piedra de la ijada, stone of the flank, through French le jade. The word names an appearance rather than a substance, which is why it covers two minerals. The final h in this spelling is an American addition with no source.

Jadah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 143 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jadah went to 7 girls in 2025, but Jada is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 197, which makes it the 763rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,169 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 8,159 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Jadah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented etymology that runs from a Spanish medical belief to a French shortening.
  • Jay works at once and serves either child.
  • Two syllables and no sound that anyone will struggle with.
What to consider
  • Jada is far commoner and the h will be dropped by nearly everyone who writes it.
  • Jade is commoner still and will be substituted in speech.
  • The h adds a letter and no sound, so its whole cost is paid for appearance.
