Jada
Feminine
Jada is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 67,400 girls against 261 boys since 1880.
Jada appears in the King James Bible as a man's name in a Judean genealogy, and in modern American records as a girl's — and it has been on those records for a full century, quietly, long before the climb that made it familiar. Two syllables, both open, closing on the same soft -a that Ada and Aida share.

Where it comes from
Origin, sound and short forms
The story of Jada
The older thread is Hebrew: a short name from the root meaning "to know," which English Bibles render as Jada, given there to a man in a list of Judean descendants. The other thread is a gemstone: Spanish sailors carried piedra de ijada home from the Americas, the phrase wore down to jade, and Jade became a given name in French and then English — with Jada following as the fuller-sounding form. In the United States the name sat on the records for decades as a scarce, steady presence before rising sharply into wide use in living memory, strongest in Texas, Florida and California. Both roads are real, and the American Jada probably owes something to each.

Either "he knows" (Hebrew) or an extended form of Jade, the gemstone
Two serious readings compete. One takes it as the Hebrew name spelled Jada in English Bibles, from the root yadaʿ, "to know" — borne there by a man in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles. The other reads it as Jade with an added -a, and jade comes to English through Spanish piedra de ijada, "stone of the flank," named for a folk use of the stone against internal pain. Neither reading has pushed the other out.
Pronouncing Jada
JAY-duh
Stress on the first syllable. Some families, particularly where Spanish or Hebrew is spoken at home, say JAH-duh; both are heard in the US.

The Rosemary test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jada's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rosemary climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rosemary's path sketches the road Jada is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds for English readers — two syllables, no silent letters, nothing to explain over the phone.
- Already short, so it needs no nickname to work; Jay and Jadie are there if wanted.
- Has close relatives in other languages — Jade in French and English, Giada in Italian — so it travels without becoming unrecognizable.
- Documented in English Bibles for centuries and on American records for a full century, so it is neither newly coined nor tied to one moment.
- The spelling competes with Jayda, Jaida and Jaeda, so expect to spell it aloud now and then even though the pronunciation is obvious.
- Most people carrying it in the US today are young adults, so it may read as belonging to a particular generation rather than as either brand-new or old-fashioned.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled — if you want one clear answer to give a curious child, this name offers two instead.
- Its use is heavier in some states than others, so how familiar it sounds will depend a good deal on where you are.
