Kyleigh
Feminine · “narrow strait or channel”
Kyleigh is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 20,193 girls against 6 boys since 1880.
Kyleigh is the American spelling of Kylie dressed in the -leigh ending that English place names gave us — the same tail that Ashleigh, Hayleigh and Kayleigh wear. Behind it stands Kyle, a stretch of coast in southwest Scotland whose name comes from the Gaelic word for a narrow strait. It is a short name in the mouth, two easy beats, and it has been on American records for decades now.

The story of Kyleigh
The oldest part is Scottish geography: Kyle, a district of Ayrshire, from the Gaelic caol, meaning a narrow strait of water. That became a surname, then a boy's given name that traveled well in the English-speaking world. Kylie grew up separately in Australia, where kylie was already an English word borrowed from Noongar for a kind of boomerang, and Australian pop music carried the name abroad in the 1980s. American parents then rebuilt it with -leigh, the spelling of the old English meadow element, producing Kyleigh alongside Kylee and Kyliegh — a very recent name assembled from very old pieces.

narrow strait or channel, joined to the Old English word for meadow
Two readings sit behind it honestly. Taken as Kyle plus Leigh, it joins the Scottish Kyle — from Gaelic caol, a narrow strait — to the Old English leah, a meadow or woodland clearing. Taken as a respelling of Kylie, it inherits that name's own unsettled history: either a feminine form of Kyle, or the Australian English word kylie, from the Noongar language of Western Australia, for a returning boomerang.

The Jenifer test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kyleigh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenifer climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenifer's path sketches the road Kyleigh is walking now.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for English speakers: the -leigh ending is already familiar from Ashleigh, Hayleigh and Kayleigh.
- Short and easy to say — two syllables, no consonant clusters, no silent traps beyond the ending.
- Comes with a ready-made short form in Ky, plus Kylie and Leigh, both of which stand alone as names.
- Rare enough in any one school that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate, while still being a name people recognize.
- Built from two well-documented elements — Scottish Kyle and Old English leah — rather than from nothing.
- It will be spelled aloud for life. Kylie, Kylee, Kyleigh and Kyliegh all sound identical, and most people default to Kylie. Expect a lifetime of "K-Y-L-E-I-G-H".
- It is also easily misheard as Kaylee or Kayleigh, which sit close in sound and are common in their own right.
- The name belongs clearly to a recent generation of American naming, so it reads as contemporary rather than inherited — worth knowing if you want something that sounds ageless on an adult.
- Its use has been strongest in the South, which may make it feel more or less familiar depending on where the family lives.
