Averi is the Avery line written with an i — and Avery itself is a name with a thousand years of travel behind it, carried into England by Norman French speakers who had reshaped the older Germanic Alberich. The sound is soft and open, three light syllables that fall away at the end, easily collapsed into two in quick speech. The spelling belongs to a recent American habit of ending names in -i, and it has been recorded here for girls throughout its run.

Where it comes from

The story of Averi

The name begins with Germanic Alberich, made of the words for elf and ruler. Norman French speakers softened it to Auberi and Aubri, and after the eleventh century it settled into medieval England in two directions: Aubrey and Avery. Avery then spent centuries mainly as an English surname before American parents began using it as a first name, first for boys, later and far more often for girls. Averi is one of several respellings that grew out of that later, largely feminine American use, alongside Averie and Avry.

Meaning

elf ruler, or elf power

The elements are consistently read as "elf" plus "ruler/power," though two routes lead there: the Germanic Alberich, reshaped by Norman French into Auberi and later Avery, and the Old English Ælfric, built from the same two ideas. Either way the reading lands in the same place.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Averi went to 190 girls in 2025, but Avery is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 5,457, which makes it the 38th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,162 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 295 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 8,459 for Averi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Pronunciation is never in question: anyone who has met an Avery will say Averi correctly on first sight.
  • The ancestry is genuinely documented — Germanic Alberich through Norman French into medieval England — which is rare for a modern respelling.
  • Established short forms already in use: Avie, Avi, Ave.
  • Related forms travel across languages, from Aubrey in English to Alberico in Italian.
What to consider
  • Avery is by far the dominant spelling, so Averi will be spelled back at her as Avery for life. It is a small, permanent correction rather than a large problem, but it happens at every doctor's office and every school roster.
  • The -i ending is a recent American fashion, which ties the spelling fairly closely to one era — something to weigh if you want a version that reads as period-neutral. Avery itself carries no such marker.
  • Averi has been recorded here for girls, but Avery is used for boys as well, so the name behind it reads as unisex to many people. Expect the occasional assumption before the two spellings are known.
