Jacinda
Feminine · “Greek hyakinthos”
The hyacinth of Greek myth is probably not a hyacinth. Ancient writers describe a flower marked with the letters of a cry of grief, and botanists have never agreed on what plant they meant; larkspur and iris are the usual candidates.

The story of Jacinda
In the myth, Apollo and the young Hyacinthus are throwing the discus when the throw goes wrong and kills the boy, and from his blood a flower springs up marked with the letters AI AI, the Greek cry of lamentation. Ovid describes the markings precisely, and no modern hyacinth has them, which is why the ancient flower is generally identified as something else, most often a larkspur, whose petals really do carry a marking that can be read that way. The name of the flower is older than Greek: hyakinthos belongs to a layer of words the Greeks inherited from the people who were in the Aegean before them, along with labyrinth and Corinth, and it cannot be broken down. Spanish took it as Jacinto and Jacinta, and one of the children of Fatima carried it into modern Catholic use.
Meaning
Greek hyakinthos, the hyacinth flower
Jacinda is a variant of Jacinta, the Spanish and Portuguese form of Hyacinth, from Greek hyakinthos. The Greek word itself is pre-Greek, borrowed from an older language of the Aegean, which is why its meaning cannot be analyzed further. The peak is 1996.
