Where it comes from

The story of Jabriel

Gabriel is one of only two angels named in the Hebrew Bible, and he appears again in the New Testament announcing the birth of John and of Jesus, and again in the Quran as the angel of revelation. Few names are shared so completely across the three traditions. The initial consonant differs because Hebrew and Arabic developed the same original sound differently: what stayed a hard g in Hebrew became a j in most Arabic dialects, which is the same split that gives Hebrew Gamal beside Arabic Jamal. Jabriel appears in United States records from the 1980s and reached its best year in 1991.

Meaning

God is my strength

Gabriel is Hebrew Gavriel, from gever or gavri, man or strength, and El, God, giving God is my strength or man of God. The Arabic form of the same angel's name is Jibril or Jibra'il. Whether this spelling is a deliberate reference to the Arabic or an American respelling of the English is a question about the family rather than about the name; both routes land on the same letters.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning shared by a figure in all three Abrahamic scriptures.
  • The J lands close to the genuine Arabic form of the same name.
  • Gabe is available as a completely ordinary everyday short form.
What to consider
  • Gabriel is the standard spelling and will be written instead constantly.
  • Two stress patterns compete and neither has settled.
  • It is close enough to Jabari and Gabriel to be confused with both.
