Izik
Masculine · “he laughs”
Izik writes Isaac the way Isaac is actually said. The c in the older spelling has not stood for two sounds in a very long time — it is a plain k — and the second a is doing nothing at all. Strip both away and this is what is left, which happens to be very close to the form Yiddish speakers have used at home for centuries.

From Yitzhak to Izik
The story of Izik
Yitzhak became Isaak in Greek and Isaac in Latin, and by that route it reached every European language that took its names from the Bible. Alongside the formal version, Yiddish-speaking communities in Eastern Europe used Itzik in daily life — the everyday name, the one a mother called across a courtyard. Hungarian, meeting the same name, wrote it Izsák and put the z into the spelling outright. So this shape sits at a crossing: it is what an English speaker would write down after hearing the name, and it is also within a letter of the form that was already in use around kitchen tables.
Meaning
he laughs
From Hebrew Yitzhak. Genesis attaches the name to laughter twice over: Abraham laughs at the promise of a son in old age, and Sarah laughs when she overhears it. The name is the verb itself, not a description of anyone who carries it.

Pronouncing Izik
EYE-zik
Two syllables, stress on the first, and the spelling delivers the sound without any negotiation. The Yiddish Itzik puts a ts where the z is, which is the one place a reader might hesitate.

The Anuj test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Izik's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anuj climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anuj's path sketches the road Izik is walking now.
Izik sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is spelled the way it is said, which the standard version of this name is not.
- The name behind it is one of the oldest in continuous use anywhere, and it belongs to three faiths at once.
- Ike and Izzy are waiting, both long established, so a boy has choices without inventing anything.
- Hungarian already spells this name with a z, so the letter is not an American liberty.
- Forms and teachers will offer Isaac, and the name will be quietly corrected on paperwork for years.
- It sits among Izak, Izaak and Itzik, so being asked which one is the permanent condition of the name.
- Some readers will take it for a surname or a nickname rather than a full given name.
