The story of Isidra
The Greek world built names on gods as a matter of course: Isidoros the gift of Isis, Dionysios belonging to Dionysos, Demetrios belonging to Demeter, Apollonia to Apollo. When Christianity displaced those gods it did not scrub the names, because the names had by then been carried by martyrs and bishops whose feast days entered the calendar. Isidore of Seville, who died in 636, was the most learned man of his age and compiled an encyclopedia that Europe used for eight hundred years; Isidore the Labourer, an eleventh-century farm worker outside Madrid, became the city's patron saint. Between them they made a pagan theophoric name into a standard Spanish Catholic one. Isidra is its feminine, common in Spain and Mexico into the mid-twentieth century, and its American peak is 1903.
Meaning
Greek Isidoros, gift of Isis
From Greek Isidoros, built from the goddess Isis and doron, a gift. Isidra is the Spanish feminine of Isidro, itself the Spanish form of Isidore. The construction is theophoric, naming a deity directly, and it survived the change of religion unaltered.
