Indy
Feminine · “A short form of India”
Indy is given to both — 2,329 girls and 847 boys since 1880. See Indy as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Indy arrives as a two-syllable clip of longer names — India, Indiana, Indira, Indigo — and it has the easy landing that short -ee endings give a word. It is also the everyday shorthand for the Indianapolis 500, run since 1911, and the name the adventure films of the 1980s gave their archaeologist hero. Familiar in sound long before it was common as a name.

The story of Indy
Indy began as a nickname rather than a name, the way Charlie or Frankie did. The words behind it come from India: Sanskrit sindhu, 'river', gave Old Persian and then Greek Indos, and Latin India, which English carried on to the American state of Indiana and to the dye called indigo. From there the short form spread through two very public channels — the Indianapolis 500, run since 1911 and universally called the Indy 500, and the archaeologist hero of the 1980s adventure films, known to everyone as Indy. American parents began using it as a given name in its own right much more recently, and it is still climbing.

A short form of India, Indiana, Indira or Indigo — no independent meaning of its own
Which meaning applies depends on the longer name behind it. India, Indiana and Indigo all trace back through Greek and Latin to the Indus river, from Sanskrit sindhu, 'river'. Indira is a separate Sanskrit name, an epithet of the goddess Lakshmi. Used on its own, Indy carries whichever of these a family has in mind — or none of them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jaquelin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Indy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jaquelin climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jaquelin's path sketches the road Indy is walking now.
Indy is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, four letters, and pronounced right on the first try by anyone who has heard the word 'indie'.
- Works as the short form of India, Indiana, Indira or Indigo, so a family can put a longer name on the paperwork and still use Indy every day.
- Used in English-speaking countries and in the Netherlands, so it travels without needing translation.
- Currently rising rather than fading, and still uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- The homophone 'indie' is everywhere in music and film, and many people will spell it that way by reflex. Expect to correct it politely and often — it is a one-letter fix, but a lifelong one.
- It reads as unisex. Indiana Jones and the Indy 500 pull the sound toward boys and motorsport for a lot of adults, even though US birth records currently list it mainly for girls.
- On its own it has no fixed meaning — it borrows whichever longer name stands behind it. Some parents settle that question by choosing India, Indira or Indigo for the birth certificate.
- Its wave is very new, so nearly everyone carrying it is a small child. There is no grown-up version of this name in most people's experience yet; the first generation will supply one.
