Freyja
Feminine · “lady”
Freyja is the Old Norse spelling, letter for letter, of the name written down in the Icelandic Eddas in the thirteenth century — the great manuscript sources for Norse mythology. In the mouth it is two easy syllables, FRAY-uh, ending in the same open vowel that Maya and Anya share. Rare in American classrooms, but instantly recognizable to anyone who has read the myths.

Where it comes from
From Old Norse freyja ("lady") to Freyja
The story of Freyja
The name belongs first to a goddess of the Norse pantheon, associated with love, fertility, gold and battle-slain warriors, described at length in the thirteenth-century Icelandic Eddas. Because freyja was also a common noun for "lady," the word survived in ordinary Scandinavian speech long after the old religion faded. Interest in Norse literature in the nineteenth century, and Wagner's operas, brought the goddess back into wider European view, and the name followed — most often in the simplified spellings Freya and Freja, which became everyday choices in Britain, Denmark and Sweden. Freyja itself is the form Iceland kept, and it is the form now climbing steadily in American records.
Meaning
lady, noblewoman
Old Norse freyja was an ordinary noun for a highborn woman or mistress of a household — the feminine counterpart of freyr, "lord." It is a distant relative of German Frau.

Pronouncing Freyja
FRAY-uh
Stress on the first syllable. In Icelandic the -yj- works as a glide, closer to FRAY-ya; in English the j is silent and the name sounds identical to Freya. Expect an occasional FRY-uh from readers who take the y as a long vowel.

The Kalyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Freyja's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kalyn climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kalyn's path sketches the road Freyja is walking now.
Freyja is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Documented in writing since the thirteenth-century Icelandic Eddas, with an unbroken record as both a word and a name.
- Sounds identical to Freya, a familiar name across Britain and Scandinavia, so the pronunciation rarely needs explaining once heard.
- Two short syllables with an open ending, easy to say beside most surnames.
- Freyja is the original Icelandic spelling rather than a modern respelling — useful if Nordic heritage matters to you.
- Freya is by far the better-known spelling in English. Freyja will be quietly corrected on forms and school lists for life, and it helps to have a stock phrase ready: "Freya, with a j before the a."
- The mythological link is strong and immediate — many people will name the goddess on first hearing. That can be a pleasure or a slight burden, depending on how much explaining you enjoy.
- The American wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it here is a small child. That means no older namesakes to point to yet, but also very little chance of a second one in the same classroom.
