Iain
Masculine · “Hebrew "Yahweh is gracious”
The extra i in Iain is not decoration — it is grammar. Scottish Gaelic spelling requires that the vowels on either side of a consonant agree in quality, slender with slender and broad with broad, so the i before the a is there to match the n. Drop it and you have anglicized the name.

The story of Iain
Gaelic orthography follows a rule known as caol le caol is leathann le leathann, slender with slender and broad with broad: the vowels flanking a consonant must both be from the slender set, e and i, or both from the broad set, a, o and u. The consonant is pronounced differently depending on which, so the extra vowels are not silent decoration but instructions about the consonant. Iain, Sìne, Mairead and Uilleam all show it. Anglicized Scottish names drop the rule and the letters together, which is how Iain became Ian. Both are in use; Ian spread worldwide from the 1930s, and Iain stayed closer to Scotland. The American figures for Iain peak in 2003.

The Irish equivalent is Seán, from the same Latin source by a different route through Norman French. All three are John.

The Cardell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Iain's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cardell climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cardell's path sketches the road Iain is walking now.
Iain sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
