The story of Homero
The Iliad and the Odyssey were attributed in antiquity to a blind poet of Ionia, and seven cities claimed his birthplace; modern scholarship regards the poems as the product of a long oral tradition, and whether Homer was a person is genuinely open. The name passed into Latin and then into the Romance languages, and Spanish Homero has been used steadily in Mexico and Latin America. American records show it with Mexican-American families through the twentieth century, peaking in 1973; in English-speaking America the name has been reshaped since 1989 by a cartoon character.

An alternative connects it to a word meaning to fit together, which ancient commentators liked because of the poems' composition, and which is generally regarded as a folk etymology.
