The story of Hiram
Hiram of Tyre appears in Kings and Chronicles as Solomon's ally and supplier, and a second Hiram, a bronze-worker, cast the temple's pillars — a figure who became central to Masonic tradition. Puritan families took the name up after the Reformation, and it was common in nineteenth-century America, standing in the top hundred and fifty for boys around 1880.

my brother is exalted
From the Phoenician, recorded in Hebrew as Chiram or Churam. The usual reading takes it as a shortening of Ahiram — ah, 'brother', and rum, 'to be high' — giving 'my brother is exalted', where the brother is probably a god. The Phoenician sources are thin, so the reading is not certain.

The trade-off
- A documented historical king, not a legendary figure — Tyre's trade with Israel is attested independently.
- It has a substantial and unusual Masonic tradition attached to a second bearer.
- Two firm syllables with no pronunciation risk.
- The Phoenician etymology is not securely established.
- It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century in American records.
