The story of Hazael
Hazael was king of Aram-Damascus in the ninth century BC, and he appears in Kings as a formidable enemy of Israel — one of the few biblical figures whose existence is independently confirmed by Assyrian records and by an inscription he may have commissioned himself. The name entered English through the Bible and is used today chiefly in Spanish-speaking countries and in the Philippines, where biblical names are drawn on freely.
Meaningscholars disagree
God sees
The usual reading joins a Hebrew verb meaning to see to the element meaning God, giving God has seen. A second account reads the first element differently, and since the man was an Aramean rather than an Israelite his name may not be Hebrew at all.
Pronouncing Hazael
HAZ-ay-el
Three syllables, first stressed, in English. Spanish gives ah-sah-EL, with the stress at the end.

The Victorino test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hazael's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Victorino climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Victorino's path sketches the road Hazael is walking now.
Hazael sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented biblical figure who is also attested in independent ancient records.
- The -ael ending puts it in visible company with Michael, Gabriel and Rafael.
- Every letter is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- The biblical Hazael is an enemy king who is not treated kindly by the text.
- The English and Spanish pronunciations differ in stress entirely.
- The meaning is contested, and the man may not have had a Hebrew name at all.
