Harding
Masculine · “of the line of Heard”
Harding is an English surname with a personal name inside it. Long before anyone in England had a family name at all, there were men called Heard — the word was simply hard, meaning firm or brave — and their households were the Hardings. The name that started as a description became a lineage, then a surname, and then, in America, a first name again.

The story of Harding
Hearding is recorded in England before the Norman Conquest, and it survived the Conquest as a hereditary surname, notably among the merchant families of the West Country. Its American career as a first name is different and much shorter. Warren G. Harding ran for president, and American parents did what they have done since the republic began — they took the winner's surname to the font. That kind of naming rises with a campaign and falls with it, which is why Harding belongs so precisely to one American generation and almost not at all to the ones on either side.

The Lacy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Harding's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lacy climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lacy's path sketches the road Harding is walking now.
Harding sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Nobody will ever have to spell it twice or hear it wrong — it is as unambiguous as English names get.
- The Old English root is documented and genuinely old, so the name has real depth behind its American surface.
- Hardy comes ready-made as a short form and is affectionate without being childish.
- It is bound to one presidency, and historians who rank the presidencies place that one near the bottom; the scandals that surfaced after Harding's death are the reason, and anyone who reads American history will know it.
- As a first name it reads as a surname first, which some people like and some find stiff on a small child.
- It sounds like the era it belongs to, and a boy may find himself the only one his age carrying that sound.
