Gwenn
Feminine · “white”
Gwenn with two n's is the Breton spelling, not an English flourish. Breton and Welsh are closely related languages that separated when Britons crossed the Channel, and they have developed different spelling conventions since; the doubled n is standard in Breton orthography and marks something about the preceding vowel that Welsh handles differently.

The story of Gwenn
Breton is the only Celtic language spoken on the European mainland, and it got there by boat. Britons crossing the Channel in the centuries after Rome withdrew took their language with them into what became Brittany, and it developed separately from Welsh and Cornish for fifteen hundred years. The three remain recognizably related: a Welsh speaker and a Breton speaker can make out a good deal of each other's vocabulary, though not enough for a conversation. The spelling conventions diverged because Breton was written by people trained in French orthography and Welsh by people trained in English, which is why the same sounds appear under quite different letters. This name is the same word in both languages and looks different because two literate traditions wrote it down separately.
Meaning
white, blessed
The Brythonic element means white or fair, and by extension holy or blessed, and both senses are live in Welsh and Breton. The reading is not disputed. It appears at the front or the back of a very large number of names in both languages, and the doubled n in this spelling is orthographic rather than semantic.
How the name formed
- A Brythonic element meaning white and blessed
- Britons carrying the language across the Channel
- Welsh and Breton writing it differently

GWEN
One syllable, said exactly as the Welsh form. The doubled n is silent as a doubling; in Breton it marks the preceding vowel as oral rather than nasal, which is a distinction the language needs and English does not.

Fashion outlook
Gwenn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- One syllable, no ambiguity in sound, and nothing to teach anybody.
- It is a genuine Breton form rather than an English decoration.
- The meaning is short, clear and rather good.
- Gwen is the commoner spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
- The doubled n is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
- It reads as a short form of Gwendolen to many people, which it need not be.
