Where it comes from

The story of Gusta

Augusta was a title before it was a name, given to the women of the Roman imperial family. It came back into European use through the German courts, and one German princess carried it to America without ever crossing the ocean: the colony of Georgia named its new town of Augusta after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the wife of the Prince of Wales and mother of George III. In English-speaking families Augusta became Gussie; in Scandinavian and German ones it was more often Gusta, and immigrant families brought that form with them.

Fashion outlook

Gusta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a clear meaning and a long European history.
  • It is short and easy to say.
  • Augusta stands behind it as a fuller form if one is ever wanted.
What to consider
  • It sounds close to gust, as in a gust of wind, and to Gus, which reads as a boy's name.
  • Many will assume it is a nickname and ask for the full name.
