The story of Gurleen
Sikh naming follows a documented procedure. After a birth the family attends the gurdwara, the Guru Granth Sahib is opened at random, and the first letter of the first word of the hymn on that page becomes the first letter of the child's name; the family then chooses a name beginning with it. The names themselves are built from a small stock of devotional elements, of which gur, the Guru, is the most common, giving Gurleen, Gurpreet, Gurdeep, Gurmeet and dozens more. The system is deliberately sexless: the same name suits a boy or a girl, and the distinction is carried instead by the titles Singh, lion, and Kaur, princess, which Guru Gobind Singh gave to all Sikhs in 1699 to replace the caste surnames.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gurleen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nadege climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nadege's path sketches the road Gurleen is walking now.
