The story of Griffith
Gruffudd ap Llywelyn was the only Welsh ruler ever to hold all of Wales, briefly, in the eleventh century, and Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was the last native prince before the English conquest. The name is therefore attached to both ends of Welsh independence. English rendered it Griffith and it became a very common Welsh surname; its use as a given name is older than that in Wales.

From Welsh Gruffudd; the second element is udd, a lord, and the first is read as strong or as a griffin without resolution. The name is old and its first half has resisted explanation.
