Graycie
Feminine · “Latin gratia”
In the 1600s English Puritans named children after virtues: Grace, Faith, Hope, Charity, Patience, Prudence, Temperance, Mercy, Constance, Silence, Thankful, Comfort. Four of those are still in use and the rest are gone. Grace survived because it is a theological term as well as a moral one, and because it is short.

The story of Graycie
The virtue names of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were a Protestant project, and their point was that a name should teach. Some were single words, some whole sentences: the Sussex parish registers of the period record Fear-God, Sin-Deny and If-Christ-Had-Not-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barebone, whose brother went by Praise-God. Nearly all of them died with the fashion. What survived was the small subset that also worked as ordinary names, short enough to say and vague enough to carry: Grace, Faith, Hope, Charity, and at a distance Joy and Verity. Grace did best of all, partly because grace in Christian theology is not a virtue one performs but a gift one receives, which made it less prescriptive than Patience or Temperance. Gracie is its nineteenth-century diminutive; Graycie is a respelling of that, peaking in 2008.
Meaning
Latin gratia, favor or grace
From Latin gratia, favor, kindness or thanks, which in Christian usage translates Greek charis and denotes God's unearned favor. The name entered English in the Reformation as one of a large class of virtue names. Graycie is a modern respelling of Gracie, the diminutive; the y inserts the letter sequence of the color word gray without changing the sound at all.
