Grey and gray is the only common English word whose two spellings split cleanly by country. Britain writes grey, America writes gray, and neither is wrong. Any name containing the word inherits that split, so Graycen and Greyson are the same name written on opposite sides of an ocean.

Where it comes from

The story of Graycen

The grey and gray split is unusually clean and unusually recent. Both spellings circulated in English for centuries with no pattern, and the modern division was settled by dictionaries: Johnson preferred grey, Webster preferred gray, and each country followed its own book. Nothing about the words differs otherwise. British writers sometimes claim the two spellings name slightly different colors, but no evidence supports it. What it means for names is that a family choosing this one is also choosing a nationality of spelling, and that records crossing the Atlantic will be corrected in both directions. The -cen ending is a further American development, doing the same job the -syn of Madisyn does: removing the visible patronymic from a name given to a daughter, so that the word son no longer appears on the page.

English surname, son of the steward or of Gray

Grayson is an English surname, usually derived from grieve, a steward or bailiff, giving son of the steward, or alternatively from the personal name or nickname Gray. Graycen is a modern American respelling that removes the visible son and changes the ending to -cen. The name is now given to both sexes, with the female use rising through the 2010s. It peaks for girls in 2016.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Graycen went to 12 girls in 2025, but Graysen is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 27, which makes it the 933rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,429 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 59,528 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Graycen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
