The story of Gita
The Gita is seven hundred verses inside a much longer epic, presented as a conversation on a battlefield between a warrior who does not want to fight and his charioteer, who turns out to be a god. It has been translated into English more often than almost any other Indian text and read by people with no interest in Hinduism at all. The word itself is ordinary: any sung text can be a gita. The Yiddish name is unrelated and much smaller in scope — Gitl means the good one, from the same German word as English good — and it was common in eastern European Jewish families and anglicized on arrival, usually to Gertrude or Gita.

song
Sanskrit gita, sung, used as a noun for a song. A separate Yiddish name, Gitl or Gittel, is from German gut, good, and anglicizes to Gita. A third road runs through Czech and Slovak, where Gita is a short form of Margita, which is Margaret. Three unrelated sources, one spelling.

The Marlette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marlette climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marlette's path sketches the road Gita is walking now.
Gita sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Sanskrit meaning that is a plain, current word.
- Four letters and two syllables with nothing hard in either.
- It is a real name in three unrelated traditions rather than a coinage.
- English readers may give the g the soft sound, which changes the name entirely.
- Geeta is the commoner transliteration in Indian families and will be offered as a correction.
- The obvious short form is an insult in British English, which is worth knowing in advance.
