The story of Gisselle
Gisela was a Frankish and German royal name — Charlemagne had a sister and a daughter of it. The 1841 ballet Giselle, in which a betrayed girl becomes one of the vengeful Wilis, made the French form famous. Spanish-speaking families use Gisselle, and it appears in the American registers in current use.
Meaning
pledge, hostage
From the Germanic gisil, 'pledge' or 'hostage'. Hostage-giving was a formal instrument of medieval treaty-making rather than a crime, and children of noble families were exchanged as guarantees. The element also opens Gilbert. The reading is documented and undisputed.

The Ester test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gisselle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ester climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ester's path sketches the road Gisselle is walking now.
Gisselle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
