Where it comes from

The story of Austin

Austin was the ordinary medieval English form of Augustine and became a surname. Stephen F. Austin led the first Anglo-American colony in Mexican Texas, and the capital was named for him in 1839. The given name rose for boys from the 1980s and for girls in smaller numbers; feminine Austin appears in the registers in current use.

Meaning

venerable, consecrated

From the Latin augustus, 'venerable' or 'consecrated', through Augustinus. Medieval English wore the four syllables down to two: Austin friars are Augustinians. The Latin is ordinary and the reading undisputed. The shortening is a documented English sound change.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Austin went to 111 girls in 2025, but Austyn and Austynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 273, which makes it the 693rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,115 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,887 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 14,480 for Austin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The venerable meaning is transparent and the medieval shortening is well documented.
  • One of the most consequential writers in Western thought stands behind the parent name.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • It reads as masculine to nearly everyone in America.
  • The Texas capital is a very strong association.
  • Austen is the spelling of the novelist's surname and is easily confused.
