Gidget
Feminine · “a small girl”
Gidget is a blend of two ordinary English words that became a legal first name, which almost never happens. It was made by California surfers in the nineteen fifties as a nickname for a small girl who kept turning up at the beach, her father wrote a novel about it, the novel became a film and then a television series, and within a few years parents were putting the word on birth certificates.

The story of Gidget
The girl was fifteen, she was learning to surf at Malibu among a group of men who mostly did not want her there, and the nickname they gave her was half insult and half acceptance. Her father was a screenwriter who had fled Europe before the war, and he asked whether he could write about it. The book he produced sold in very large numbers, the film that followed made surfing a mainstream American subject rather than a local Californian one, and the television series ran for a season and made a star of its lead. The real person spent the rest of her life being asked about it. It is one of the very few names in the American record whose entire history can be told with dates, places and the names of everyone involved, from the moment of coinage onwards.
Meaning
a small girl
The word is a blend of the ordinary English word for a girl and the word for a very small person, coined as a nickname and never intended to be a name. Its meaning is therefore exactly what its makers meant by it, which is a rare and slightly uncomfortable clarity: most names have lost their sense, and this one has not had time to. It is also, unavoidably, a description of size.
How the name formed
- A nickname coined among California surfers
- A novel written by the girl's father
- A film and then a television series
- The word appearing on birth certificates
Pronouncing Gidget
GIJ-it
Two syllables, stress on the first, with a soft g at the front and a hard t at the end. It rhymes with fidget and midget, which is not a coincidence: the second half of the word is the second half of one of them.

Fashion outlook
Gidget sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, bright and impossible to mispronounce or to forget.
- Its origin is documented down to the year and the people involved, which almost no name can claim.
- Gigi and Gidge are both usable and both sound nothing like the full name.
- The word means a small girl, and it is a description a child will grow out of and still be carrying.
- The second element of the blend is a word most people now consider offensive on its own.
- It is very firmly attached to one decade of American popular culture.
