The story of Gianina
Romanian is a Latin language surrounded by Slavic ones, and its naming reflects both: Ioan is its John, and Ioana and Gianina are among the feminines built from it, with the Italian-looking Gi- spelling arriving through Italian influence in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Italy has Giannina and Gianina too. The name came to American records with families from Romania and Italy alike, and it is used across Latin America as well.
Meaning

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Darling test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gianina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Darling climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record.
