Geralyn adds -lyn where Geraldine adds -ine, and the two endings were doing the same job in different decades. Gerald is the base — a Germanic compound about a spear and about ruling — and English has built at least four women's names on it, each with a different suffix and none of them older than the sixteenth century.

Where it comes from

The story of Geralyn

The -lyn ending became fully productive in American naming in the middle of the last century and attached to almost any base that would take it: Carolyn, Jaclyn, Katelyn, Roselyn, Geralyn. What makes this one worth noticing is that Gerald had already been feminized once, in the sixteenth century, by a poet — so Geralyn is a second attempt at the same job four hundred years later, using a suffix that did not exist the first time. The single r also distinguishes it visually from the Gerri family.

Meaning

spear-ruler

Germanic ger, a spear, and wald, rule, combine as Gerald. The derivation is not disputed. Geraldine was coined in a Tudor sonnet sequence from the FitzGerald surname; Geralyn is a twentieth-century American formation using the -lyn ending, which descends from Welsh llyn, a lake, by way of the name Lynn but arrives here as a suffix carrying nothing.

Geralyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 346 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Geralyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Geri and Lyn are both usable short forms and they sound like two different names.
  • The Germanic derivation is documented and concrete.
  • Three syllables with a firm front stress, which carries a short surname well.
What to consider
  • The g is read hard by first-time readers and the correction has to be made out loud.
  • Geraldine and Geralyn are close, and the longer name will be substituted.
  • The -lyn ending places the name in the middle of the last century fairly precisely.
