Where it comes from

The story of Georgeanna

The second element has a queen behind it who did rather better out of a bad situation than anybody else did. She was married to Henry the Eighth for six months, was divorced when he decided he did not want her, agreed to it immediately and without argument, and was rewarded with a substantial income, several houses and the formal rank of the king's sister. She outlived him, outlived all five of the others, and was on good terms with two of his children. Of everybody involved in that reign she is the one who read the situation correctly and acted on it.

Meaning

earth-worker, joined with grace

The first element is Greek and describes working the land; the second is Hebrew and means grace. Compound names are read as two senses side by side rather than merged into one.

Fashion outlook

Georgeanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has short forms from either end with completely different characters.
  • The rhythm is long and even and rather stately.
  • Both halves are instantly familiar even though the compound is not.
What to consider
  • Three spellings compete and this one gets corrected to the shorter two.
  • Four syllables is long and most people will shorten it immediately.
  • The compound style belongs firmly to the first half of the last century.
