Gennifer
Feminine · “White phantom”
Gennifer writes with a g a sound that English usually spells with a j, and the g is the older letter of the two. J did not exist as a separate letter until the sixteenth century; before that the sound was written with a g or an i, and a name spelled this way is using the arrangement English had for most of its history.

The story of Gennifer
Cornish was a living language until the eighteenth century and this is one of the very few things that survived it into general English use. The language declined west along the peninsula for three hundred years, was down to a few hundred speakers in the fishing villages by the seventeen-hundreds, and stopped being spoken as a first language within a generation or two after that; what it left behind is place names, a handful of dialect words, and a small number of personal names of which this is much the most successful. It has since been revived by enthusiasts and is taught again. The name went from a dying language in one county to the top of the American charts, which is not a route anybody could have predicted.

White phantom
The Welsh name behind it joins a word meaning white or fair to a second element usually read as a spirit or apparition, though that reading has been argued over. It came into English use from Cornish rather than from Welsh, which is why it looks the way it does, and the modern spellings are all English.

Three syllables with the stress at the front. The g is soft because of the e after it, which is the ordinary English rule; a reader applying it correctly will arrive at the right sound without help.

Fashion outlook
Gennifer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established and never needs to be repeated.
- Jen is a short, plain everyday form available from the start.
- The g spelling is historically defensible rather than arbitrary.
- Jennifer is enormously commoner and this will be read as a slip.
- The soft g is guaranteed by the rule but readers still hesitate over it.
- The name is very closely dated to one American generation.
