Where it comes from

Our story of Genice

Gentian is the blue flower of alpine meadows, bitter enough to be used in medicine and in the stomach-settling drinks of half of Europe, and it is named after a man. Pliny records that Gentius, the last king of Illyria, discovered the plant's medicinal properties, and the name stuck to it. What Pliny does not dwell on is how Gentius finished: he picked the wrong side in a Roman war, was defeated in something like a month, and was paraded through Rome in a triumph before being interned in an Italian town for the rest of his life. His kingdom vanished. His flower is still in every herbal in Europe, and still in the bottle behind most European bars. Genice has no documented connection to any of it. But a name whose own origin is unrecoverable may as well keep good company.

The Gen in front could come from Genevieve, Eugenia, Jennifer or Gena, and nothing in the record narrows it. The ending is the ordinary American one shared with Janice and Bernice.

Genice sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Genice sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, spelled as it sounds, and rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • Gen comes off the front as a short form and is already familiar.
  • It sits in known company with Janice and Bernice, so it is unusual without being strange.
What to consider
  • It will be written Janice, Jenise and Genese by people working from sound alone.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of the last century, which places the name in time.
