Gean
Feminine · “well born”

Gean is a small name with two large ones standing behind it. Say it and most people hear Gene; write it and most people see Jean with a letter missing. It has been on American birth records for more than a century without ever gathering a crowd, and it is one of those spellings that families keep going by habit and hearing rather than by looking anything up.

The story of Gean
The Scots kept gean as a word for the wild cherry long before anyone used it as a name, and Scotland is also where Jean did the work that Jane and Joan did in England. When those families reached America, clerks wrote what they heard, and Gean is one of the shapes that came out of it — sometimes a woman's Jean, sometimes a man's Gene, and often no more than one household's way of writing a name it had never seen printed. That mixed parentage is why the spelling has stayed rare and stayed alive at the same time.
Meaningscholars disagree
well born, or God is gracious, depending on which name it is spelling
Two readings compete, and the spelling does not choose between them. Taken as a form of Gene, it goes back through Eugene to the Greek Eugenios, well born. Taken as a form of Jean, the Scottish woman's name, it goes back through Jane to the Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious. There is a third thing worth knowing: gean is also an ordinary Scots word, still used in the north of England, for the wild cherry tree, borrowed centuries ago from the Old French guigne.

Pronouncing Gean
JEEN
Families say it both ways. JEEN follows Gene and Jean, and is much the commoner. GEEN, with a hard g, follows the Scots word for the cherry tree and still turns up. Neither is a mistake, but a household should settle on one early, because the written name gives no clue.

Fashion outlook
Gean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters, one syllable, nothing to trim — it is already as short as a name gets.
- It stands beside two names everyone knows, so it is never unfamiliar even when it is unrecognized.
- The record carries it for boys and girls alike, which is rare in a name this old and this short.
- It will be read as a typo for Gene or Jean, and correcting that is a lifetime's small errand.
- There is no settled pronunciation, so the first day of every school year begins with an explanation.
- Almost every child given this spelling now is a boy, so a girl named Gean is the exception rather than the pattern, and forms will guess wrong more often than they guess right.
