Gary as a given name is twentieth-century American, and its rise is closely tied to a film actor who took it as a stage name in the 1920s, reportedly after the Indiana city. The name climbed for three decades after that. Garry is the doubled-r spelling, common in Britain and Australia and used in America too, peaking in the mid-1950s.
