Where it comes from

The story of Garrick

David Garrick, born in Hereford in 1717 to a family of Huguenot descent, became the dominant figure of the eighteenth-century English stage as actor, playwright and manager of Drury Lane; he is generally credited with replacing declamatory acting with something closer to naturalism, and with the modern reputation of Shakespeare. Samuel Johnson, who traveled to London with him, wrote that his death eclipsed the gaiety of nations. The surname became a given name in the twentieth century in his honor and in the general surname fashion, and its best year in United States records is 1973.

from the scrubland

The surname Garrick is generally traced to the Huguenot Garric or Garrigue, from Occitan garriga, limestone scrubland dominated by kermes oak. A separate Germanic derivation from ger, a spear, plus ric, ruler, is also proposed. The Huguenot route is the documented one for the family that made the name famous.
