The story of Gabriell
Gabriel does the same job in three religions and is named in all of them. In the Hebrew scriptures he appears to Daniel and explains a vision. In the Christian gospels he is sent to Zechariah and then to Mary, and the second of those errands became one of the most painted scenes in European art. In Islam he is Jibril, and he is the angel who brought the revelation to Muhammad, which makes him central rather than incidental. Very few names carry that kind of triple citizenship. The spelling with the doubled final consonant, and this one with a single l and no e, are both American attempts to write the name so that the stress lands at the end, where French puts it and English does not naturally.
Meaning
God is my strength
Hebrew gever, a strong man, and el, God, joined into a short statement. Angel names in Hebrew are built this way and almost all of them end in the same element: Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Gabriel. The name says something about God rather than about the child, which is true of most of the theophoric names and is worth knowing before it is explained to anybody as a compliment.

GAY-bree-el
Three syllables with the stress at the front in American English and at the back in French and Spanish. The doubled or single l at the end makes no difference to the sound; it is doing work on the page, not in the mouth.

Fashion outlook
Gabriell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name behind it is one of the most widely recognized in the world, across three religious traditions.
- Gabe is a short, plain everyday form that carries none of the weight of the full name.
- It is spelled almost identically in French, Spanish and Portuguese.
- It is one letter from the standard feminine spelling, and the record holds this version for both sexes.
- Gabriel is the expected spelling and will be written instead of this one nearly every time.
- Gabby is the short form most likely to attach itself, and it is shared with the girls' forms.
