Gabriele is one spelling doing two different jobs. In Italy it is a man's name, said in four syllables with the weight on the third. In Germany it is a woman's name, the feminine of Gabriel. Both are correct, neither is a variant of the other, and an American birth certificate cannot tell them apart. This spelling goes mostly to boys here, but not only.

How old is the name Gabriele?

Gabriele first appears in US birth records in 1961 — 64 years ago. The typical Gabriele alive today was born around 2003, making them about 22 years old. About 900 people named Gabriele are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Gabriele most popular?

Gabriele peaked in 2001, reaching #2797 nationally. Today it ranks #4539, 1,742 places below that high. See the whole 2001 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Gabriele

Gabriel traveled as an angel rather than as a man, which is unusual and explains its spread: every language that received the scriptures received the name, and each one shaped the ending to its own grammar. Italian added the -e that marks a great many men's names there — Michele, Raffaele, Daniele, Gabriele — so the spelling is straightforwardly masculine in Italian and always has been. German built its women's names on Latin models instead, giving Gabriele and Gabriela as feminines. The two conventions had no reason to meet until immigration put them in the same filing system. In the United States both arrive, from different families, spelled identically.

Meaning

God is my strength

Hebrew Gavriel joins gever, a strong man, with El, God. The usual reading is God is my strength, and the alternative, man of God, comes from the same two words in the other order — a difference of emphasis rather than of substance. Gabriel is one of the two angels named in the Hebrew Bible and the one who speaks in both the Gospel of Luke and the Quran, which is why the name is at home in three religious traditions and every language they reach.

Pronouncing Gabriele

gah-bree-EH-leh

Italian gives four syllables with the stress on the third and the final e fully sounded: gah-bree-EH-leh. German says gah-bree-EH-luh, ending in a softer vowel. English readers usually produce GAY-bree-ell, treating it as Gabriel with a stray letter — which is the one saying that belongs to neither tradition.

Gabriele sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 39 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Gabriele went to 22 boys in 2025, but Gabrielle is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 34, which makes it the 894th most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,645 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 50,238 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 77,640 for Gabriele itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a working name in Italian, German, Spanish, Hebrew and Arabic without translation.
  • Gabe and Gabi are both waiting inside it, and either one works in any accent.
  • The angel behind it is recognized in Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike, which very few names manage.
What to consider
  • In America the final e will be read as a feminine ending, because English has no other model for it; a boy carrying this spelling will be corrected toward Gabriel constantly.
  • The name is a man's in Italy and a woman's in Germany, so the same spelling reads differently depending on who is looking at it.
  • It goes mostly to boys in the United States but a real minority to girls, and a girl named Gabriele will find that Gabriella and Gabrielle are what people write instead.
