Franki
Feminine · “a Frank”
Franki is given to both — 1,136 girls and 84 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Franki descends from a tribe, and the tribe gave its name to a country and to an English adjective. The Franks conquered Gaul, made it France, and were free men in a society where most people were not — which is where frank, meaning candid, comes from. Franki on a girl is a mid-century American form, peaking in 1966.

The story of Franki
Francis of Assisi was baptized Giovanni and nicknamed Francesco, the little Frenchman, because his father traded in France and his mother may have been French. His fame made the nickname a name, and it spread across Catholic Europe. The feminine Frances followed in English, and its short forms — Fanny, Frankie, Franki, Fran — carried it in speech. Franki with an -i belongs to the mid-twentieth-century American fashion for giving girls men's short forms with a distinguishing spelling, alongside Toni, Bobbi, Jodi and Tomi, and its peak in 1966 sits at the end of that period.
Meaning
a Frank; free
The Franks were a Germanic confederation who took over Roman Gaul in the fifth century and gave France its name. Under Frankish rule only Franks had full legal freedom, which is how the Latin francus came to mean free, and how English frank came to mean candid — a free man could speak freely. The personal name Francis originally meant 'the Frenchman' or 'the Frank'. Every step is documented.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Franki's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marlette climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marlette's path sketches the road Franki is walking now.
