The story of Fraidy
Ashkenazi women's names include a set made of ordinary Yiddish words for good things — Freida joy, Blima a flower, Perel a pearl, Golda gold — and none of them has any scriptural basis. Yiddish then makes affectionate forms with -y or -i, and in Hasidic and yeshivish communities those affectionate forms go on the certificate: Fraidy, Blimy, Rivky, Chany. Fraidy reaches United States records almost entirely from those communities.
Meaning
joy
Yiddish freyd means joy or gladness, and it is the German Freude with the Yiddish vowel. Freida and Fraida are the names built on it, and Fraidy is the affectionate form with the -y ending. It is paired in Jewish naming with the Hebrew Simcha, which also means joy — the vernacular and Hebrew names translating each other.

Two syllables, stress on the first. German Freude is FROY-duh with a quite different diphthong; the Yiddish vowel shift is what separates them.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fraidy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Samyra climbed just as high around 2007, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Samyra's path sketches the road Fraidy is walking now.
Fraidy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
