Ford
Masculine · Old English roots · “ford”
Ford is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 11,009 boys against 17 girls since 1880.
Ford is one of the oldest words in English still doing daily work: a ford is the shallow place where a road meets a river and crosses it without a bridge. It sits inside Oxford, Stratford and Bradford, and it traveled into American given names the way many English surnames did — through family lines, and then simply because people liked the sound. One syllable, one clean vowel, and nothing in it to explain twice.

Where it comes from
From ford (Old English, a river crossing) to Ford
The story of Ford
The Old English word ford meant exactly what it means now: a crossing point in a river shallow enough to walk or ride through. It gave England a great many place names, since a settlement grew wherever a river could be crossed, and those places in turn gave families their surnames — a man was called Ford because that is where he lived. The same root shows up across the North Sea in German Furt, as in Frankfurt, and in Dutch voorde. From the English surname it moved into use as a first name in the American habit of turning last names into given ones, and it has stayed on the register quietly ever since.

The trade-off
- A plain English word, so the spelling arrives already known — nobody needs it repeated letter by letter.
- One syllable and one vowel: fast to say, hard to mishear, and it carries well when called across a yard.
- In continuous use as a given name across many generations, without ever becoming a crowded classroom name.
- Sits comfortably in the surname-as-first-name tradition, so it pairs easily with both short and long middle names.
- The strongest association in American ears is the car company, and a child named Ford will field truck jokes and Mustang comments at some point. Most families find this wears off; it is worth knowing it is coming.
- There is essentially nowhere to shorten it. If you like having a tender nickname in reserve, this name does not supply one, and a middle name may have to do that work.
- It reads as a last name to many people, so expect the occasional "is that your surname?" — a small, repeated question rather than a real problem.
