Azariah
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “Yahweh has helped”
Azariah is given to both — 6,558 boys and 7,389 girls since 1880. See Azariah as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Azariah is one of the old Hebrew names built around the word for help, and it has been read aloud in English Bibles since the seventeenth century. In the mouth it runs long and even — four syllables that land on the same rising -IAH as Isaiah and Josiah, then fall away softly. Ancient on the page, and mostly worn by young children in the US right now.

The story of Azariah
The name comes from Hebrew ʿĂzaryāh and appears repeatedly in the Hebrew Bible, carried by kings, priests and scribes — among them the young man in the book of Daniel renamed Abednego in Babylon. Greek translators wrote it Azarias, Latin kept that form, and English Bible translators restored the Hebrew ending as -iah, which is the spelling used today. English-speaking families took it up in earnest after the Reformation, alongside other scriptural names pulled straight from the text rather than from the saints' calendar. Its recent American wave belongs to the broader return of long biblical boys' names ending in -iah, and it is strongest in the South and West.

That is the standard English reading, stress on the third syllable. In Hebrew and in most other languages it is closer to ah-zar-YAH, so relatives abroad may say it differently.

The Augustine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Azariah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Augustine climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Augustine's path sketches the road Azariah is walking now.
Azariah is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- The spelling is the one used in English Bibles, so it is findable and defensible even where the name itself is unfamiliar.
- Its meaning is settled rather than guessed at, which is not true of every ancient name.
- Several ready-made short forms — Ari, Zay, Az — all in real use.
- The -iah ending is already familiar from Isaiah, Josiah and Nehemiah, so it patterns easily for teachers and classmates.
- It exists in Greek, Latin, Spanish and Russian forms, so it travels without becoming unrecognizable.
- Expect to spell it out. Azaria, Azariya and Azariyah all circulate, and the final -h is the piece people drop.
- Two pronunciations compete: az-uh-RYE-uh in English, ah-zar-YAH closer to the Hebrew. Pick one early and say it first when you introduce the child.
- It is given to both boys and girls, but the boys' side is considerably larger. A girl named Azariah will meet forms and teachers that assume otherwise, which is manageable but worth expecting.
- Almost everyone carrying it in the US is a child, so it currently reads as a young name rather than a name of any particular age — the ancient pedigree is on the page, not in most people's ears.
