Tanner began as a job description: the person who turned raw hide into leather, one of the noisiest and most necessary trades in a medieval English town. The word became a surname, the surname became a first name, and it has been on American birth records for well over a century. Two syllables, one obvious spelling, and no one has to ask how to say it.

Where it comes from
From tannere (Old English, 'one who tans hides') to Tanner
The story of Tanner
Tanner comes from the Old English tannere, a worker who cured animal skins into leather, and the word behind it traveled through Medieval Latin before that. Because the job was distinctive and the guilds were organized, it settled early and widely as an English hereditary surname. It crossed the Atlantic as a family name, and later, when American parents began drawing first names straight from the surname pool — Hunter, Parker, Cooper, Carter — Tanner came with them. The German surname Tanner looks identical but grew from a different root, referring to someone who lived by the fir woods.

The Morris test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tanner's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Morris climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Morris's path sketches the road Tanner is walking now.

The trade-off
- One spelling, one pronunciation — almost nobody asks twice, and nobody has to spell it over the phone.
- Already familiar as a surname, so it sounds like a name people know even when they have never met a Tanner.
- Over a century on American birth records, with a long stretch of steady, widespread use behind it.
- Short and complete as it stands, with no obligatory nickname to negotiate.
- The name has a clear generational shape: most people carrying it in the US are young adults rather than children. For some parents that is pleasantly familiar; for others it can read as recent rather than timeless.
- "Tan" is close enough that tanning-salon and spray-tan jokes turn up eventually. They tend to be brief and low-grade, but they do turn up.
- Nickname options are thin. Tann and Tanny are about it, so a child who wants a very different everyday name may have to reach for a middle name instead.
- Occupational surname names cluster together in sound — Hunter, Parker, Carter — so it may be one of several similar-feeling names in a friend group without ever being duplicated outright.
