Augustine is a Roman name that never stopped being used: a diminutive of Augustus, worn down in medieval England into the everyday Austin, then restored to its full length by later generations. It belongs to the fourth-century bishop of Hippo whose Confessions is still read, and to the monk sent to Kent in 597 who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. The oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the United States, St. Augustine in Florida, carries it too.

Where it comes from

The story of Augustine

The name begins as Latin Augustinus, a diminutive of Augustus — the honorific taken by Rome's first emperor and by every emperor after him. Christianity carried it far past Rome: Augustine of Hippo in North Africa in the fourth and fifth centuries, and Augustine of Canterbury, sent to England in 597, made it a churchman's name across Western Europe. Medieval English speakers clipped it to Austin, which is how it appears in old records and why Austin later became a surname and a Texas city. The full Latin form stayed current in Spanish as Agustín, Italian as Agostino and French as Augustin, and returned to English use alongside its own shortened offspring.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two well-worn short forms, Gus and Auggie, both in real use for generations.
  • A spelling nearly everyone can read, thanks to the saint, the Florida city and the Confessions.
  • An unbroken written record from Roman antiquity to the present, with no gap in use.
  • Travels intact: Agustín, Agostino, Augustin and Augustyn are the same name to Spanish, Italian, French and Polish ears.
What to consider
  • Two accepted pronunciations, aw-GUS-tin and AW-gus-teen, means a lifetime of small clarifications — worth deciding early which one your family uses.
  • The religious weight is real. For many people the name means the bishop of Hippo first, which some families love and others would rather not carry.
  • Four syllables on paper, and most people will reach for Gus or Auggie in daily life. If you dislike either, that is useful to know now.
