The story of Augustine
The Senate's title for Octavian became a name, and its diminutive Augustinus was borne by the bishop of Hippo whose writing shaped western Christianity more than any author after Paul, and separately by the monk sent to convert the English in 597. English used Augustine for both sexes historically; the women's use appears in American records around 1880 and the men's continued alongside it.
Meaning
venerable, majestic
From Latin augustus, consecrated or worthy of honor, related to augur and to a verb meaning to increase; Augustinus is its diminutive. The month of August carries the same word for the same emperor.
