The story of Flavia
Roman family names frequently record a physical feature, and the color ones are a substantial group: Flavius, yellow-haired; Rufus, red; Albinus, white; Fulvius, tawny; Niger, black. The Flavians were a family from the Sabine country who came to power after the chaos of AD 69, and the amphitheatre was built partly on the site of Nero's private lake as a deliberate gift of the ground back to the public. Flavia was carried by several early Christian women and became a standard name in Italy, Spain and Romania. The American figures peak in 1884.
Meaning
Latin "golden, yellow-haired"
From flavus, yellow or golden, presumably a byname for fair hair. Flavia is the feminine of Flavius, a Roman gens name borne by the emperors Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. The amphitheatre they built between AD 72 and 80 was the Amphitheatrum Flavium; the name Colosseum comes from a colossal statue of Nero that stood beside it.
