The story of Fadi
Christianity in the Middle East is older than Islam by six centuries and did not go anywhere. Communities in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine have used Arabic as a liturgical and everyday language for well over a thousand years, and several also keep Syriac, which is a form of the Aramaic that was spoken in the region before either. Their naming reflects it: some names are shared with Muslim neighbors, some are Arabic renderings of biblical names, and some, like Fadi, are theological terms that only make sense in a Christian frame. American records show the name concentrated where those communities settled, which is a demographic fact rather than a linguistic one.
Meaning
redeemer, one who ransoms
Arabic fadi, from a verb meaning to ransom or redeem by sacrifice. It is an active participle used as a name, and it is given almost entirely by Christian families, for whom it is a title of Christ. The grammar is the same as in Najah and Shakir.

The Levan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fadi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Levan climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Levan's path sketches the road Fadi is walking now.
Fadi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Arabic meaning with a clear grammatical structure behind it.
- Four letters and two syllables, easy for English speakers.
- It is a current, ordinary name in living communities rather than a revival.
- English readers will lengthen the first vowel, which changes the word.
- The one-syllable clip is an ordinary English noun.
- It signals a specific religious community, which is the point for some families.
